Yesterday we learned about scale in maths. We looked at the mountains and rivers in Europe and decided to focus on Mont Blanc, Aneto, the Rhine and the Danube.
After a lot of discussion on scale we agreed on a suitable scale and we went outside to draw the mountains and rivers to scale in the playground. We drew the mountains using the scale 1km : 1m and we drew the rivers with the scale 1000km : 1m.
Next to Aneto we drew Wallace’s monument using the same scale, it was tiny in comparison!
Here is a Shape Collage of us working in our groups:
In class we have been painting in the style of Picasso.
We cut eyes, noses and mouths out of magazines.
We stuck the magazine pieces onto a piece of card then after that we drew them onto another bit of card to look the same as our magazines style. We could draw hair on if we wanted to.
After that Miss Law photocopied them and then we painted them. We could pick if we wanted warm colours or cold colours and we could mix colours to make new colours if we wanted to.
Then after that Miss Law put our three pictures together and backed them all. They are all up on the wall outside our class.
We all have had great fun drawing and painting Picasso style !!!!!!!!
Have a look at our pictures in the Animoto slideshow below.
As our topic is Europe we decided to separate our wall space into 9 sections . Then we split the class into 9 pairs. We were given a country for each pair. We had 6 weeks to make a wall with information on our country. We had to include information such as the name of the country, languages spoken there, the capital, the population, the flag, principal seas, rivers, mountains and well known products or food . When our time was up the results were remarkable .
Last Thursday we had a visit from two members of Alloa Rotary club. As you may already know, we recently stayed silent for various amounts of time to raise money for the recent earthquake in Haiti. So, today, we had a visit from the president and secretary of Alloa Rotary club, who told us about the charity that Rotary international own – Shelterbox. This is who we donated the money we collected from our fundraising day to.
They showed us a DVD about what kind of work Shelterbox do and what kind of things they put in the boxes of aid. They also told us that they had already sent out 10′000 box’s of aid to Haiti and thousands more were going out soon, which is great news.
We raised £414!!!!
This will help the Rotary buy one more box to send to Haiti. We would like to thank the Rotary for coming to see us and hope that they can come again!
We have been learning aboout the EU economy. In Athens in 2003 the 15 countires of the EU decided to take on 10 new countires, many of them poorer than themselves.
Do you think this was a good idea? We have been looking at the reasons why the original 15 countries wanted to enlarge.
As a listening exercise Miss Law read out the beginning of Chapter 19 in the book Percy Jackson and the Olympians – The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
The extract described the Underground. In Ancient Greece, this is where the Greeks believed you went when you died.
We had to take note as Miss Law read. She read it out twice. After we had written our notes we had to then draw our interpretation of the Underground.
Have a look at our Animoto to see our drawings of the Underground.
On Tuesday night 5 of us plus Miss Law and Mrs Finch went to Alva Academy to compete in the Clackmannanshire Primary 7 School quiz. There were lots of schools from Clackmannanshire there. The quiz was organised and run by members of Alloa Rotary Club.
There were 10 rounds of questions on all different subjects. You could score a maximum of 12 points in each round. Overall we scored 103/120 making us the 2010 winners!
It was a fantastic night and we are looking forward to competing in the next round in Perth!
